The museum and research center for Icelandic Leader sheep is situated in Þistilfjörður. Leader sheep are a unique strain that exists only in Iceland with a population of 1.400 pure breeds. They should not be mistaken with the common Icelandic sheep roaming wide and far around the island. Leader sheep are known for their outstanding behavioral abilities and intelligence. Throughout the centuries many stories and legends entwine about leader sheep who saved their flock and humans from upcoming dangers. They have been an integral part of Iceland’s sheep farming since the settlement.
