Just a bit downstream of Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss, is another beautiful waterfall, the Hafragilsfoss. The name could be loosely translated as Goat canyon waterfall. here the water drops about 27m into Jökulsárgljúfur canyon and is part of the surreal environment of Rauðhólar.
The surrounding Vatnajökull National Park became a UNESCO world heritage site in 2019.
Getting There
The waterfall can be reached from the est and west, both offering a completely different view. If you travel along the western riverbanks, drive road 862, then follow the signs in the direction of Dettifoss. At the last turn to the right before the parking lot a small track turns left with a weathered sign saying Hafragilsfoss. Take this track until the parking lot and walk until the edge of the canyon.
If you travel on the eastern banks take road 864 until the sign pointing at Rauðhólar and Hafragilsfoss. Road 862 requires a 4×4 vehicle.
