Credit and Debit Cards

Debit and credit cards are widely used in Iceland. Nowadays the locals rarely use cash since most businesses accept card payment even for small purchases. VISA, MasterCard and Eurocard are the major credit cards in Iceland and serviced by all banks, both electron and meastro cards are commonly accepted. MasterCard is the service partner for Diners Club and JCB in Iceland. Traveler cheques are not so common and often only accepted by major hotel chains, banks and tourist centres. Usually the cards used in Iceland use a chip-and-PIN system that requires a 4-digit PIN number. For travelers using a traditional “swipe and sign” card it is recommended to check with their bank about getting a chip-card.
