Weather and Road Conditions

A famous Icelandic proverb says: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes and it will change”. What the proverb doesn’t say is whether the change brings better or worse weather. Find it out by yourself, both for Húsavík and its beautiful area and for the whole country.

Moreover it is always wise to check the conditions of the roads in north-east Iceland every day before setting off, in particular the conditions of the highland routes. The road conditions are updated every hour during daytime. And always remember to travel as safe and cautious as possible.

In the period October- April it is advised to drive with studded tires since common all-year or winter tires will not have sufficient grip on possible icy roads.

In summertime the white nights are a beautiful scene and great experience but dangerous when it comes to driving because one may not notice how late it actually is because it is still bright outside and notice tiredness in time. The opposite happens in winter time when the shortage of daylight and darkness may affect driving, especially if driving in winter is a new experience.

If you are planning to drive through the new tunnel between Húsavík and Akureyri on the ring-road make sure to register your car in time to pay less toll. You can register your car at www.veggjald.is
